Customs & Traditions of Bishop Auckland
Location: Durham

The aim of this project was to research and interpret the culture and history of Bishop Auckland, focusing on traditional stories, folklore, seasonal traditions, old recipes and customs associated with rites of passage through life, such as birth, marriage and death.

The group have done this by involving the local community, schools and visitors to the centre, in a range of activities from oral history research to art workshops, storytelling and drama.

An exhibition has been produced which details the customs and traditions uncovered through the research of a local oral historian along with members of the group themselves. The exhibition toured the local libraries and is now on permanent display within the Centre.

The culmination of the project was the production of a booklet, which contains all the research, plus selected images from some of the community workshops. Entitled "Customs and Traditions of Bishop Auckland" it details how the residents of Bishop Auckland celebrated the main festivals of the year such as Easter, Christmas and New Year as well as other occasions such as birth and death. Included are the origins of local customs, such as Pea Scadding, Heaving days, the Hoppings and Riding the Stang together with recipes for local delicacies
