Edmondsley is home to an ex-mining community in County Durham. The group is researching the history of the parish and working with an artist to produce an interpretive work of art. This will mark the starting point of a heritage trail supported by a leaflet and guided walk. Members of the group have completed training courses run by the Workers Education Authority in order to carry out effective research work using the County Archives.
Village meetings have been held and members of the community have brought forward old photographs and documents to illustrate the area's history, as well as contributing stories of the past. In addition to the mining history of the village, research has produced evidence of WWII aircraft crash sites. The possible location of the iron age settlement known to have existed near the present village has also been revealed.
The project enjoys the support of the local youth group, luncheon group and schools. Interest in starting a local history society has also been identified.
