Our Schools' Project

Hillside Cemetery: Back to Life
Location: Durham

The project proposes the creation of interpretive and learning materials based on the characteristics of a disused burial site.

Memories of residents will be captured through an oral history exercise and this information, together with desk research into the lives of some of the more famous characters interred in the cemetery, will be used to produce a history trail.

A launch event will stimulate local interest in the site and this will be followed up with a series of activities such as geological and historical tours and photographic exhibitions featuring contributions from residents. A lychgate, which is one of the focal points of the site, will be restored and volunteers will learn skills in masonry care and maintenance through a series of professionally led workshops. School tours and talks will be undertaken by volunteers in order to generate interest within the younger age groups.
