Piercebridge Divers Project
Location: Durham
The North East is inextricably linked with the Roman occupation of Britain. Cades Roman Road ran from Brough on Humber to Newcastle upon Tyne.
The Piercebridge Divers' team are attempting to locate and record the missing Durham section of the Cades Roman road. This can be partly achieved by discovering where the Romans crossed the River Wear in the Durham city area. This will be done with underwater exploration by divers using waterproof metal detectors, video, and still cameras.
The project will be well supported by non diving volunteers who will be involved in research, surveying, and field walking the surrounding area.
It is believed the road crossed the River Wear at a possible two points and a complete survey of the riverbed will be carried out at both locations in order to establish the exact location of the bridge. Volunteer surveyors will help identify land-based evidence to determine the bridge approaches.
A video and booklet of the project will be produced and made available to other interested groups and individuals. Any artefacts found will be examined and recorded by the County Archaeologist. The group will use workshops with local schools and societies to display the findings.
