Rookhope Trails
Location: Durham
Rookhope is a remote village within the North Pennines AONB, an area that has a strong industrial heritage through lead mining. This project will develop a series of walks around Rookhope taking in 10 sites that have important links to the area’s industrial heritage. These will include the Weardale railway line, lead mines, commerce and agriculture.
The group will actively engage local people in producing a guidebook, leaflet, and a mobile, interactive display. Volunteers will also be involved in site clearance in order to make the trail more accessible, particularly for people with disabilities. Each site will also have its own information board.
By creating the trails, the community has an opportunity to learn more about the rich industrial heritage of their surroundings through research, and will also have an opportunity to learn new skills in photography, IT and practical planning, as well as opening up the heritage of Weardale to visitors.
All local people will receive a free copy of the guidebook and leaflet.
