Another Success - Our Second Exhibition
Location: Durham
Shadforth History Group held its second exhibition in the village hall, almost a year to the day from its first. Could this become an annual event?
It was mainly a photographic exhibition of pictures given to us over the last year. Members of the history group had also taken recent photos of the village to compare them to the old photographs we had been given. Some scenes had hardly changed, while others had changed almost beyond recognition and some buildings had disappeared altogether.
Mr. Nairn, our guest speaker, gave a talk and slide show on old postcards the first evening and 50 people attended. Some members of the audience had brought their own postcards to be valued and went home happy knowing they had a little nest egg.
Many people returned the next day to view the exhibition again, bringing with them yet more photographs that we had not seen before. People came from far and wide: a lady from Kendal in the Lake District, another from France. Everyone was chatting, renewing old acquaintances, reminiscing, exchanging information or making new contacts.
The exhibition generated lots of new material for our archives and more potential candidates for interviewing. It seems the more work we do the more work we generate and the more knowledge we gain of this little village.
The two photographs of this event show:
1. Mr. Nairn about to start his talk
2. Doris Walker, aged 90, former resident of Shadforth being taken around the exhibition by her granddaughter, Joanne (left) with history group member Helen (right)
