How it started

It all began with the loss of the village green. How can you lose a village green?
Well, over the years the village green has slowly eroded away due to traffic running over the edges and cars parking along side it. As much as two feet had disappeared in some areas. Something had to be done. Grants were applied for and Shadforth Village Green is now in the process of being restored.

It was from this initiative that the Shadforth History Group emerged. If we were saving our village green for the future, might we not look back at and preserve its past? Older residents could remember playing football, cricket, dancing round the maypole and celebrations on the green. We felt we had to capture these memories.

The History Group has decided to document people’s memories of village life in this mainly rural farming community in County Durham, (a county more famous in recent times for its coal pits and slag heaps). Shadforth itself never had its own coal mine, although it was surrounded by many pits and had a quarry. Our aim is to collect old photographs and memories, hold exhibitions in the village hall, produce an information board and walk leaflet for visitors and a book about the history of Shadforth
