Shadforth - A Village History
Location: Durham
We believe that Shadforth is unique! We are not aware of any other village in England with this name, which means ‘Shallow Ford’. The village is also very old, being mentioned in the Boldon Book of 1183. It has maintained its medieval shape of irregular houses placed around a linear green and is known as one of the ‘green villages’ of the North East of England. It is unusual too, in that it has always remained rural, never having it own pit, although surrounded by coal mines and industry. It has a registered village green and is designated a conservation area.
The history group formed recently from the village green initiative. (See page 1 ‘How it started’). Our main aim is to talk to local residents and preserve their memories of life in this rural village in the last century.
The aims of the project are:
- To talk to local residents about their memories of village life
- To research the archives for old maps, school logs, parish records
- To produce a photographic archive of old pictures of the village
- To hold 2 exhibitions of our findings. The first, to coincide with celebrating 50 years of our village hall, has already taken place. The second will be later in 2005, based on village history
- To produce an information board on the history of the village to be located outside the village hall
- To produce a walk leaflet for visitors pointing out buildings of interest
- And finally to produce a book on all our findings, to be completed by the end of 2005
