Our First Success - An Exhibition
At the beginning of October we held our first history exhibition in the village hall over three days, (two-hour sessions each day). It was a great success.
Our village hall is 50 years old and the village wanted to celebrate with a 1950’s Dance, with an old style juke-box. The history group used this opportunity to research the building of the hall. It was built entirely by voluntary labour by the men of the village. Women and school children helped by cleaning the second-hand bricks. Sand was donated by the local quarry.
Fund raising events were staged, with the Women’s Institute taking a lead role. It took seven years to build, from the first idea to its official opening. Now, 50 years later, the current residents of Shadforth were dancing to ‘Rock around the Clock’ on the juke-box, viewing an exhibition of 1950’s memorabilia, including old dresses and work tools, looking at old photographs and reading people’s personal memories of how they built the village hall.
The visitor’s book indicated over 100 people saw the exhibition. Comments in the book included: ‘ ….well planned and thought out…..beautifully presented…..superbly displayed……..makes you proud to belong to the village.’ One thank you letter said: ‘I know that dad and his fellow workers would be thrilled to know that the village hall is being used so much by the villagers.’ The exhibition was reported in two local newspapers.
There was great satisfaction in seeing reunions of old acquaintances, and in present residents showing amazement at seeing their houses as they were in the past.
It has also given the members of the history group confidence to stage their next exhibition.
