St. John's Memorial Gates
Location: Durham

A former mining community, the villagers of Burnhope wished to acknowledge the importance of the village's industrial heritage. They also wanted to ensure that any public information they produced was in an accessible form. They carried out community-led research into the mining history of the area and arranged a community consultation for the preparation of design work for the memorial gates.

Following this, the project produced interpretation panels which were sited alongside the new memorial church gates. These gates, made by ex-miners, commemorate the miners who lost their lives at Burnhop Pit. The gates were officially opened by the Bishop Durham in spring 2003.

An exhibition of mining memories was also produced to be displayed in the church and ex-miners give talks to children in school meetings.
