The Weardale Festival
Location: Durham

The Weardale Community History Project will help local people to create 16 community exhibitions held in Weardale during the Weardale Festival, and in the longer term. The area includes 9 villages and the main towns of Wolsingham, Stanhope and St John's Chapel.

Mobile exhibitions will relate to the specific local heritage of each area and will contain new photographic images as well as other local artefacts such as antique wedding dresses, old quilts and christening gowns. The Exhibitions will be open to the public during 3 weekends of the Weardale Festival in August, and then tour more venues such as local schools, the Weardale Museum, Crook and Bishop Auckland Libraries. Heritage information will be widely distributed in leaflets, notelets, and flyers and a programme of local experts, such as the National Park Archaeologist, will offer walks and talks. A drama teacher will help school children to design and perform in a community drama about local folklore, including stories such as the Bride of Stanhope Hall spirited away by fairies, the hermit of Linkirk Cave and the Battle of Bonny Moor Hen. The Group will use expert help from the Durham CRO and a local company to produce a Photo Motion DVD with commentary, to accompany the exhibitions.
