Trees@Cotherstone - Past & Present
Location: Durham
The group is concerned that a large proportion of the tree stock within the village is old and as some are lost in every gale, there is a danger that the natural heritage of the area, and the habitat for local flora and fauna will be irretrievably lost.
The project aims to determine the rate at which stocks are being diminished and to undertake a survey of the age, type and condition of remaining trees, in an area of around 3 kilometres within the village boundary.
Professional support will be secured for various aspects of work such as charcoal and pollen analysis. Results obtained, plus desk research and local knowledge will be used to inform the production of a comprehensive survey document. In addition, an informative guided walk leaflet will be produced giving details of tree distribution, an interpretive panel will be created and sited at the village school and a new website will be developed to chart work and progress. Working with local volunteers and the village primary school a replacement tree planting programme will be undertaken using locally sourced stock including young trees cultivated by local children from seeds collected within the village. Two guided walks per year, spring and autumn, will be held and a series of events will be staged to encourage and retain community engagement.
