The Barrington School
Location: Gateshead

The school was established in 1832 and is named after its founder the Rev. Shute Barrington, who was Bishop of Durham at the time. Other supporters included Lord Ravensworth and Mr. Thomas Davison. The present building dates from 1867, the school previously being conducted in two local cottages purchased for the purpose. Masters included: Messrs.Dawson,Winstanley,Thornton,Revel,Wakefield,Barass,Leach,Newbiggen,Lawther and Middleton. The School received a donation of £10.00 per annum from Lord Ravensworth. At its peak in 1833 there were 330 pupils recorded on the register. The building is presently used to house an animal refuge.

The lower photos show the entrance to Eighton Cottage known locally as Favells Gate. The owner at the time of the older photograph was a Mr. John Milner Favell, who was appointed coroner for the area in 1843. He was to die as the result of a hunting accident in the field but till then was an active supporter of the school which was situated close by his estate.
