The Board School
Location: Gateshead

The school was one of the first purpose-built by the recently formed Gateshead School Board at the turn of the century. It replaced a former National school sited opposite which had been damaged by mining subsidence. It opened in January 1900 when its first headteacher was a Mrs. Mary Winters, seen on the accompanying photograph.

Her daughter went on to be the Director of Education for Gateshead in the 1950's. The school was originally designed to accommodate some 300 pupils at a time when the local village consisted of about 200 houses accommodating some 1200 individuals, half of which were under the age of 25 years.

As the village expanded after the war years this figure was exceeded many times to the point where some lessons were taken in the corridor without any desks or seating accommodation. Most of the school was moved to a new site now known as Fell Dyke in the early sixties, which eventually closed in June 1962.

The building was subsequently converted for community use and continues to operate in this role to the present day.
