The Mechanics Institute
Location: Gateshead
During the 19th century changing work patterns resulted in a reconsideration of attitude by the ruling classes in regard to the education of working class people. Previously it had been considered that even basic education was unnecessary for working class people and would lead to the fermentation of revolutionary tendencies. Therefore, in the early part of the century it remained largely the perogative of the wealthy.
As more people became employed within the new industrialised society the need to provide all workers with a basic education became generally accepted. As there were no libraries or other educational establishments for adults at this time it became necessary to provide buildings by public subscription. The Mechanics Institute was such a building and was sited on the land provided by Lord Ravensworth at the junction of the cross roads at the south end of the village. It was described as having " a lecture hall capable of holding 200 people, a library of 400 volumes, reading and recreation rooms ".
A prominent feature on the roof of the building was the large clock which was later illuminated with gas. As public libraries and other educational establishments became accessible its usefulness diminished. After being the home of several local organisations, including the Salvation army, it was eventually demolished in 1937.
