The Smithy - Rose Cottage
Location: Gateshead
Rose Cottage was the original dwelling for the head teacher, adjacent to the National School. The School suffered from neglect but following the introduction of the new school boards the building was repaired and re-opened as one of four Gateshead board schools in 1876. The building once again became unsafe as a result of mining subsidence and eventually moved to a new purpose built school opposite the original site.
The house was purchased by the Dobson family and the site became the local "smithy" eventually converting to a garage and petrol business in the post-war period. The original rose cottage was demolished as a result of subsidence effecting the foundations and was replaced by the present bungalow. The foundations of the original National School, although overgrown, can still be seen.
