The Waggonways
Location: Gateshead

Development of the waggonways began in this area in the early 19th century. They provided a vital means of transporting coal from local pits and mines in the west of the region to the Tyne via the Pelaw and Jarrow staithes. From here the coal was shipped abroad and to other parts of the country providing a substantial income for the owners. Their evolvement resulted in a number of unique design features by local engineers including Samuel Cooke of Eighton Cottage and Benjamin Thompson a work colleague.

The first section of the Pontop/Jarrow line was designed by George Stephenson. This was also the last section to close during the mid-seventies. Evidence of the presence of waggonways can still be clearly seen today and a short stretch continues to be operated by the Bowes Railway Project from the former Springwell Colliery site to Eighton Banks.
