Blaydon Races Heritage Trail
Location: Newcastle Upon Tyne
The song 'Blaydon Races' was written in 1862 by Geordie Ridley of Gateshead. It is known worldwide and is sung whenever Geordies gather. Information about the song and its context is, however, surprisingly scarce. Although many articles and booklets have been published in the past, there is nothing currently in print. There is nothing to remind and explain to people the journey that was recorded in the song on June 9th 1862.
The aim is to establish a Blaydon Races Heritage Trail that will incorporate several components, principally:- A walking and cycling trail following the route described in the song, with waymarkers, interpretation boards and plaques.
- A leaflet showing the course of the route, and a more detailed booklet.
- Investigation of the heritage of Blaydon itself.
- Production of a play based on the life and times of Geordie Ridley, the song's author.
- An exhibition in Blaydon of material produced for the trail.
- A website.
- A week of activities in June 2004, celebrating the formation of the trail, as well as replicating the mixture of musical and sporting events that occurred during the races.
