'East Side Story' - the Musical
Location: Newcastle Upon Tyne

The group want to work with experts to produce a musical based on the history of the East End of Newcastle with costumes, props and lighting. Comprised of sketches based on significant events in local history, it will be researched, written, and performed by local people with the assistance of specialist tutors/directors.

Volunteers took part in the pilot musical in 2003, and this project develops that idea further. 150 volunteers will rehearse and perform in the musical, based on significant historical events in the area such as Heaton Pit disaster, Ouseburn Leadworks and the redevelopment of Byker. There will be further active volunteer involvement through workshops and guided walks. Songs with a local flavour will be included and the performances which will be held in venues around the East End.

The musical will premiere at the Ouseburn Festival and the Tall Ships race in 2005 and 7 additional performances will take place on the actual sites of the historical events. Awareness will be raised further with posters, leaflets and a booklet with heritage trail map.
