Fish Quay Historic Quarter Design Statement
Location: Newcastle Upon Tyne
North Shields Fish Quay dates back to 1225, when a small settlement was established to house fishermen who supplied the Monastery of Tynemouth Priory. The main fishing quay on the Tyne and the largest prawn port in England, the fish quay has recently been designated as a conservation area and is a popular visitor attraction, hosting an annual "Fish Quay Festival".
Through LHI, local community group FISHcast are producing a character design statement celebrating the area's diverse heritage, focussing on the origins of the fish quay and the changes which have shaped it, it's history as a working quay and the biodiversity of the quay itself.
The area includes such historic landmarks as Clifford's Fort, originally built as a defence against the Dutch and developed further during the Napoleonic Wars, as well as the Grade 2 listed Low Lights Tavern, a popular haunt for fishermen in years gone by.
Opportunities for involvement from the wider community, including local school children, include a series of workshops and survey activities which will shape the content of the character statement.
On completion of the document, a celebratory launch event will be held with an exhibition of the project's findings. North Tyneside Council are keen supporters of the project and will be assisting the group with communications aspects. It is hoped the Character Statement will influence future planning policy.
