Interpretation of the Rising Sun Country Park

Interpretation of the Rising Sun Country Park
Location: Newcastle Upon Tyne

Background Information

Friends of Rising Sun Country Park successfully applied to Awards for All so they could produce 3 leaflets for the general public to use on their visits to the Park.

The leaflets were titled:
  • Wildlife
  • History
  • Organic Farm .
Whilst researching for the History leaflet they became aware that there did not appear to be much information about the Heritage of this site. It was decided to apply for LHI funding to install Interpretation Boards throughout the Park thus informing the users and preserving the knowledge for future generations.

Local Community Involvement

As soon as the Friends knew they had been successful with the LHI bid they obtained publicity about it and organised 2 public consultation meetings for the members of the local community.

A PowerPoint presentation was given and this was followed by general discussion about the next stage.

A local primary school, Battle Hill, has an Archive Group and they have also been researching the history of this site. They were keen to get their research into the public domain and it was agreed that by working together we would both achieve our goals.

Individuals, through the local history societies, public meetings and personal contacts, began to supply photographs, anecdotal evidence and give interviews based on their own experiences or knowledge.

A map of the Park was used to identify suitable locations for installing the Interpretation boards. Using this map and the History leaflet, 1st Killingworth Cub Pack visited the Park, to walk the route checking the sites for each board. They also carried out a measuring exercise to determine possible heights of the boards so that they were accessible for children and wheelchair users to read.
