How we got started

Jesmond Dene Old Mill
Location: Newcastle Upon Tyne

This project aims to improve the accessibility of a Grade II listed building, research and record its historical past and produce new interpretive material for the benefit of the local and wider community.

A group of volunteer rangers plan to carry out archaeological excavations, instigate clean-up and improvement works and complete appropriate desk top research into the background of the Old Mill with the support of relevant professionals and the involvement of interested residents. A new viewing area will be erected to allow visitors to see into the mill yard, a scale model of the mill will be created and new interpretive material will be produced, funded by the City Council.

The Old Mill is sited in Jesmond Dene, a conservation area and well used green corridor centrally situated in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. The Dene is a haven for wildlife and is on the Parks & Gardens National Register. A focal point for visitors to the Dene, the Old Mill is currently overrun with weeds and covered in graffiti.

The proposed works will allow visitors to appreciate its improved appearance and understand its industrial past and function. By informing and involving as many local people as possible the group aim to engender a greater sense of responsibility and ownership of the Mill thus reducing future misuse.
