More background about the Mill Project
Location: Newcastle Upon Tyne

The Old Mill is a Grade II Listed building in Jesmond Dene park, Newcastle Upon Tyne. It has been in a ruinous and neglected state for many years. The first discussions about how we might improve the Old Mill began almost two years ago in late 2003. Hundreds of hours of research and preparation later, we were delighted to be awarded a grant of £24.477 from the Lottery Heritage Initiative in October 2005. Now the real work begins and we would like to tell you more about it here.

What will it achieve?

The project will focus on improvements to the site to make it more attractive as an amenity in the Dene and to finding out more about its past. These improvements will be in three main areas:
  • Basic tidying up and maintenance work and removing weeds and graffiti, repairing damage to the waterwheel and some of the safety grills.
  • Improving access to the mill with a new ramp and guard rail on the riverside access path and a large new viewing area at the entrance to main mill room.
  • Improving and sharing knowledge of the past history of the mill to encourage more visitors to the site. We will research its history and carry out an archaeological survey. This information will be used to provide interpretation boards at the mill site, build a scale model of the mill and publish brochures to encourage more visitors to learn as much as they can about the mill.
Who is doing the work?

The work will be organised and managed by the Friends of Jesmond Dene Volunteer Ranger Group although we will need professional help with some of the tasks. For example, the archaeological survey must be supervised by a professional archaeologist, but we will be doing as much as possible of the actual tasks and learning lots of new skills.

How long will it all take?

We expect to take about 12 months to complete the work, starting in November 2005. You can find out more by looking at the Project Plan.
