Update November 2005
Location: Newcastle Upon Tyne
This week we will start work on the first task - getting rid of about 20 years of weeds that are covering the floors and walls of all the mill rooms. We have bought tools to help us with this and a camera which will help us record our progress throughout the project. Some of the 'before' shots on this page show you what a jungle it is at the moment.
We have also started the archaeological work. The first stage - the 'Desktop Survey' - will research the history of the building using local and regional archives, provide drawings of the mill site indicating the main structural features and provide detailed supporting photographs to help with the analysis. From this the professional archaeologist supervising the project will prepare an initial report of how the current mill building has developed and changed over time, evaluate where we should focus our 'dig' and have some idea of what we might hope to find.
Finally we have begun developing our websites - both here on the LHI main site and also at our 'own' site. With little previous experience, this may be slow at first - but we hope to expand it gradually so that visitors to both sites can see more about our project as it progresses. As we get further into the project we hope our experiences will contribute to the wider community by helping future projects learn from our experiences along the way.
