Path Head Water Mill Restoration & Enhancement
Location: Newcastle Upon Tyne
The Vale Mill Trust was founded in 1992, to promote awareness of heritage in the community. They operate from Path Head Mill, which is a restored water mill and they have now developed into a a comprehensive visitor centre.
The mill was restored using machinery from other Northumbrian mills and they have also installed machinery for woodworking, that can be viewed from the display gallery. Among the range of attractions they have a growing willow house, popular with children and a stone seat, built by a drystone walling team, when they were unable to get access to the fields because of the outbreak of Foot and Mouth.
With the help of a grant from SITA they have recently developed and opened up the mill pond, creating islands from which visitors can experience the tranquility of the location. They are currently building bridges to these islands to make suitable access for wheelchairs.
The most recent development is the acquisition of two derelict allotments, from which they are creating a reservoir. With the wind pump , currently being restored and the installation of a hydraulic ramp pump, they will be able to demonstrate alternative renewable energy.
The project draws interest , not only from local visitors, but from places as far as Canada, Denmark and the Baltic seaways.
