The Battle of Newburn
Location: Newcastle Upon Tyne
The aim of this project is to research, commemorate and raise awareness of the 1640 Battle of Newburn Ford, which is a little known battle between the English and the Scots. Existing accounts of the battle are brief, with little or no detail on many aspects of the movements of both sides. For example, where exactly did the Scots set up camp before the battle, and which route did they take along the Tyne? Much of the landscape has been changed through industrialisation, and research will be carried out using maps, field walking and other archaeological methods
Volunteers will build a stone cairn to commemorate the battle with interpretation Boards. The survey research will be carried out by local volunteers, supported by the Park Rangers, County Archaeologist and Tyne & Wear Museums Service. A series of activities and displays will be organised, with walks around the battle site, offering many more local people opportunities to become actively involved with the project. Many local people hold battle artifacts and the project will research and document these. A leaflet will show the area of the battle with a self guided walk, educational pack and booklet, art work and creative writing by local children, as well as a mobile exhibition to be displayed in the Country Park and Library. Awareness will be raised further through a re-enactment event.
