Heritage Group News
Location: Newcastle Upon Tyne
The group has researched and led 4 new walks thanks to LHI – shown here; new volunteer guide Dawn Howe introduces people to the natural history of the Ouseburn. Participants learned how the valley’s history as demolition site and landfill has affected the species growing here, and saw how isolated pockets of damp-loving plants hinted at a hidden burn shown on early maps but lost for centuries.
The group has also participated in local festivals with their ‘Memory Booth’, collecting oral history recordings from the community. Unexpected bonuses to this activity have been the donation of old school books from the 1920’s, and photographs from the 1950’s. All items are being inventoried and catalogued for an eventual free access archive.
