The Percy Hedley Centre caters for people with cerebral palsy. Services are for both day visitors and residents and there is a highly successful horticultural centre.
This project involved residents, staff, carers and families in the restoration of an area of ancient woodland in the grounds of the Centre in order to facilitate access to natural heritage and assist future management of the woodland. The woodland was originally part of a Victorian garden.
Overgrown paths were cleared, extended and made suitable for wheelchair access. Trees and a wildflower meadow were also planted. The weir and watercourse which runs through the grounds were restored. These features were once used as part of the drainage system for local mines.
Interpretation of the built and natural heritage was provided via leaflets and displays. Local people are encouraged to use the Centre and groups can access the grounds. The local play group, camera club and allotment society all use the facilities.
