A Future For Hyon's Wood
Location: Northumberland

Hyons Wood is a 200 acre ancient natural woodland on the edge of Prudhoe in Northumberland. For some time local people have been concerned that the wood, which is traversed by Public Rights of Way, has been deteriorating due to abuse and neglect. Now Prudhoe Community Partnership is taking action to preserve and manage this important site and promote heritage and public access to the wood.

The site has a rich and diverse heritage, encompasing natural and industrial aspects. Coal mining took place there until the 1950s and the wood is bisected by an old waggonway and tramway and is still owned by UK Coal, who have given permission for the project to take place.

Local 'A' Level students will be trained to survey the wood, looking at badgers, birds, invertebrates and bats. Events will be held for local people with bat, moth and wildflower guided walks.

The group will carry out a public consultation and best practice will be examined, resulting in the production of a management plan to raise awareness of the local heritage and secure the long term care of the woods. Flyers and leaflets will be produced to document research.
