Alnwick & District Training Apiary
Location: Northumberland
The project will establish a training apiary with 10 hives and provide the necessary equipment and training for people to learn about and take up beekeeping. Children from local schools and adults will learn about, investigate and take actions to conserve the honeybee. Northumberland Wildlife Trust will train local volunteers to help with a honeybee survey at 10 wildlife sites facilitated by a specialist honeybee expert. These results will be recorded in a GIS database and results placed on a web site.
School children will be able to learn about the heritage of honeybees through visits to the apiary and the Wildlife Trust Activity Centre where they will interpret this through activities involving beeswax candle making and a demonstration hive.
250 free schools publications will be produced and distributed, and another 1000 leaflets will facilitate school group sessions which will be interactive and tailored to younger age groups.
