Alnwick Market Place Heritage Seats
Location: Northumberland

The Project focuses around the historic Market Place in Alnwick, Northumberland. This dates back to an original settlement of Anglo-Saxon times and has had a colourful history relating to activities such as the sale of live animals, proclamations, and an ancient bullring. The group wants to involve local school children in heritage research via a combination of visits and talks, culminating in the design of two interpretive heritage seats to promote access to the historic market place.

A local history expert will give talks at two local schools and visit in costume to bring heritage alive, with possible additional involvement from a local historical re-enactment company. A local blacksmith will help children to produce interpretive designs, run taster blacksmithing sessions for the children and then produce the two seats for the Market Place. An exhibition banner will be produced and a written record of the history of the Market Place for the Bailiffgate Museum and the County Record Office. Plaques on the seats will direct people to this further research information.
