Cambo PTA Music project
Location: Northumberland

On 29th March 2004, this group performed an informal concert in the central hall at Wallington. They are currently developing stories and songs from the scenes, depicted by William Bell Scotts paintings which represent the history of the North East, from roman to industrial times.

For performances they have adopted a plaid "The Northumbrian Tartan". Shown in the first panel and believed to date from roman times.

The project was formed to pass onto young people in the community the cultural traditions of the area, through music, dance and stories. They wanted to give the younger children a greater understanding of their past, the signs of which have largely disappeared. In particular they wanted to explore the historical links between Cambo and the Wallington Estate; the Trevelyan family and the Ashington miners.

Meeting weekly the enthusiasm and enjoyment have engendered great interest and the group numbers can swell to fifty, embracing all ages of the community. They have purchased a number of new instruments and music stands and have composed 2 new songs.

They are forging links with a folk group from Russia, who are keen to encourage their children to continue the folk traditions. They are planning a Maypole dance; a CD; a calendar and will be launching their book in Summer 2004.
