Embleton Parish Walks
Location: Northumberland
Embleton is a small parish located within the Northumberland Coast AONB, with strong historic links to Dunstanburgh Castle and Howick Hall. The parish council want to create a series of self-guided walks around the parish, based on existing rights of way networks. To do this, they propose to have an open day where local people will walk the rights of way network to identify circular routes and features of interest, and to identify any faults and improvements to be made to the network. This will then be followed by a programme of research by local volunteers, with the aim of producing a walks leaflet incorporating a map of the trails and heritage information. The leaflet will also contain information on public transport times, local services and the newly launched Country Code This will be supplemented by an information panel in the village, and a more detailed guidebook (to be freely distributed among the local community), which will describe the walks in more depth, outlining points of interest about local natural, cultural and historical features. A walking festival will be held at the end of the project to formally launch the trails.
This project has a good level of in-kind and volunteer support, as well as demonstrating good links with and support from other local groups and organisations, including a local WHI group and Northumberland County Council. The Northumberland Coast AONB recreation and access officer has been working with the parish council from the outset to develop the trail, and the AONB team will be responsible for making sure that the walks are accessible to people with disabilities. Embleton has LEADER + status, and lies within a protected area. Some parts of the parish also have SSSI, SPA, SNCI, SAC and European Marine Site status. The parish will ensure that areas of difficult terrain are marked on the map, and are also including the country code in the publication.
