The Bellview Project
Location: Northumberland

Bellview, Belford Ltd is a local community charity redeveloping the site of Bellview Residential Home, a former Victorian workhouse, to provide an integrated resource centre and sheltered housing project.

Many of the older villagers have grown up with an awareness of the workhouse as the central point of the village and the group would like to find out about and record the history of the workhouse and its successor institutions and the parts they played in the lives of locals.

Existing records at local archive offices and the PRO at Kew will be consulted. An oral history project will look at the history of the buildings between the first and second world wars. A permanent record of this aspect of village life will be provided through information panels within the new development, a booklet and the development of web pages.

An education pack will be developed for local schools and talks will be given to local groups such as WI, Carers, Local History Society.
