Haltwhistle - Up The Valley, Down The Years
Location: Northumberland

Life in and around Haltwhistle has changed rapidly since the closure of most of the industries. We are losing oral, documentary and photographic evidence of our past. This project is trying to preserve the areas’ photographic heritage, the memories of local people concerning the Depression and the Second World War, and raising awareness of this further through drama, publications and the active involvement of all age groups. Themes of particular interest are memories of the POW camp, the Land Army, evacuees, rationing and the Home Guard.

The project includes: new equipment to scan and store photographic and documentary evidence and training for volunteers in interviewing techniques, interpretation and IT skills. It is also involving local children in the interview process and through creative writing and re-enactments will develop and perform a dramatic production which will involve volunteers. It is intending to publish two booklets, lead a guided walk and eventually produce information panels. A marvellous and engaging PowerPoint film has been produced, which is a thoroughly illustrated account of local history. It has been produced, merging images from a vast slide collection with the sound recordings of the late schoolmistress’s local history talks.

The group has already held several successful exhibitions with hundreds of locals attending. The Society is a Sub Committee of the Haltwhistle Partnership, which is a charity and limited company. The IT equipment will be kept on community premises at the Haltwhistle Partnership, where there is daily public access. Photographic and oral history records will be stored at the County Record Office, with copies sent to County Library Service. As well as giving training to schoolchildren, the project will link them with the older population and is actively supported by the school.

The group has taken advice from the North East Museums Libraries & Archives Council (NEMLAC) and the County Archives, with letters of support and offers of help. They have also liaised with other LHI related projects in the area such as Allendale Photographic Archive and Bellingham Heritage Centre.
