Land Lines
Location: Northumberland
The Pinwell is a small spring near Wooler where for generations people have come to throw in bent pins for luck, particularly young ladies who wished to be married. The tradition is one that continues today, albeit with the substitution of pennies for pins.
The well is overlooked by the King's Seat, an outcrop of sandstone, and a group of hills called The Kettles. There is also the remains of an iron age hillfort settlement and WW2 defences, as well as footpaths linked to St Cuthbert's Way.
After taking part in a workshop with Northumberland National Park on this site, the school and students wanted to more fully investigate the Pinwell area. This project will see students investigating their local heritage, working with biodiversity experts from Northumberland National Park to produce a written survey.
They will work with a local artist to gather more local heritage information and interpret it through a collage artwork, as well as maps and written material. This will further raise awareness of the Pinwell among local people.
