Lindisfarne Gospels Garden
Location: Northumberland
Holy Island, or Lindisfarne, is an AONB, has a unique heritage and is perhaps the most important place in England in terms of religious significance. It was on the island, in the early 7th century that St Aidan based his mission to reintroduce Christianity into the kingdom of Northumbria. Lindisfarne became the seat of education, with many saints deriving from the island, in particular St Cuthbert, to whom Durham Cathedral and the Lindisfarne Gospels are dedicated.
The project aims to interpret heritage research to make a garden about the Lindisfarne Gospels, on land opposite the Heritage Centre. This holds copies of the Gospels and has received funds previously from the Heritage Lottery Fund. An archaeological survey will research the site before work commences. Local volunteers will receive expert training to make the garden themselves, while leaflets, launch and a web site will raise awareness further.
