The Medieval Fayre of St.Bartholomew

Mary Hunter

The sea-front and promenade at Newbiggin-by-the-Sea proved to be an excellent stage for the medieval fayre.
The tranquil interior of the much loved and well used medieval church contrasts with its dramatic setting on a rocky headland.
The magnificent East Window is by the late North East artist, Stanley Murray Scott
The cobles may now be housed in a boat park but visitors will see very little change in The Old Ship Hotel, pictured on this charming old postcard.

Perceptions of our Past
Location: Northumberland

It was because of the interest shown by the youngsters of Simonside Theatre Group in a copy of the 1204 charter granted to Hugh de Balliol which allowed a weekly market and a yearly fayre at Newbiggin, that the idea of a medieval weekend began to take root. SYT

Initially we met with St. Bartholomew's church members, who for many years had celebrated the festival of the Patron Saint of the parish, and Wansbeck district Council which was already planning to make a significant investment towards a family weekend over the August bank holiday. After this very constructive meeting we decided to apply for funding to accomplish our input into the weekend. People from all sections of Newbiggin life attended the subsequent open meetings and as they say, the rest 'is history'.
