Quakers' Hole Wetland Project
Location: Northumberland

Quaker’s Hole is a small area of wetland on the edge of Whitley Chapel village, which lies on the boundary of the N. Pennines AONB. This project will bring together a number of local residents in developing Quaker’s Hole as an environmental and community resource, through investigating and interpreting the natural heritage of the wetlands.

Training will be given to local volunteers, through a series of community workshops, to survey local species, flora and fauna. Workshops will also involve local children and adults in poetry, artworks and traditional environmental management skills (e.g. dry stone-walling).

Activities such as pond dipping, bird watching and bat walks will be undertaken with local schoolchildren, and The findings of the surveys will be used to produce a 10-year management statement. Nest boxes with cameras will be installed on the site to record and transmit images of birds’ nests to the local school. An information board will tell the story of Quakers Hole, with 2 smaller boards being erected at the site entrance.

An A5 colour leaflet will provide additional information for local people and visitors. A celebration day will mark the start of the project.
