Remembering Flodden
Location: Northumberland
The aim of this project is to explain and inform and stress the importance of Flodden Field (more accurately known as The Battle of Branxton Moor), which was fought close to the village of Branxton in 1513. The group intends to increase access to the battlefield by means of new footpaths and by publicising a short route which can be followed by car. They will also place information boards and seats at strategic points along these routes.
Branxton Village Hall, which is currently undergoing refurbishment, is central to the project as it will become a centre for a mobile exhibition about the battle and display collections of Flodden artefacts.
A video about the battle will be produced which will explain the routes taken by the opposing forces, the battle tactics and why the local topography played such a vital part in the outcome of the Battle. There is a small booklet about the Battle which is available in Branxton Church and moves are afoot to modernize and revamp it.
The group have recently produced a leaflet to promote the Battle and the local area, this is evolving to include local businesses and other points of interest. Branxton parish council recently undertook a Parish Plan, and much of the work going on in the village, including this project, has come out of this completed document.
The battlefield trail was officially opened in July 2004 by Lord Joicey, of Ford and Etal estates, and was attended by a large gathering of local people and tourists, as well as attracting newspaper and television coverage.
