Rescuing Ratty

Water Shrews

Water Voles

Researching Ratty
Location: Northumberland

Northumbria mammal Group wish to investigate the distribution of two Biodiversity Action Plan riparian mammals - the water vole and the water shrew. These species are under threat in most lowland areas of the UK, including Northumberland, due to habitat loss and predation by mink. Information will be used to help safeguard the future of the species.

The project will use a professional field surveyor to train local community volunteers, including schoolchildren, in survey techniques. Two sites in Northumberland will be surveyed as part of the project. Further awareness of these species and their wetland habitat will be raised through workshops and school river sessions, events, talks, leaflets and electronic publications.
