Riverside Land Project
Location: Northumberland
The idea for this project at Felton arose when a special section of land on the north bank of the River Coquet was acquired, as a gift, by the Parish Council.
The riverside land occupies a significant position in the village and when asked what they most liked about their village, the residents placed this site first. With the assistance of money from 'The Felton and Thirston Fair Committee' and a donation from Age Concern, the legal fees associated with the change of ownership were met and the project took shape.
The Parish Council wished to make this site, which is a designated SSSI and home to the red squirrel, accessible to everyone. A path has been created together with a disabled access ramp. The children of Felton First School were involved in writing workshops, interpreting their heritage through poetry. The poems were displayed at "The Running Fox" in Felton and the community was invited to vote, inorder to make the selection of three couplets, which were then carved into the surface of three stone benches situated on this site.
There is also an interpretation board, the artwork being provided by the Felton Art Group, together with a free leaflet.
