The Future Of The Past In Tarset
Location: Northumberland
This community-based project took a holistic approach to the compilation and research of a comprehensive digital archive for Tarset, a widely-scattered upland community with a strong sense of its identity, but where much of the area's history was previously unrecorded.
The group aimed to raise awareness of the local heritage, to collate what already existed, and to stimulate community interest and involvement to help fill in the gaps. Local people would have opportunities to be involved through helping with surveys, talks from visiting experts, exhibitions, training days and guided walks.
Activities would include archaeological and oral history recording projects, cataloguing and scanning of a significant private photo collection, producing a set of new images of Tarset, a major geology and mining project, and several surveys of the natural heritage including bats, winter birds, lichens and wildflowers.
A study of the geology of the area would reveal the relationship beneath ground to the history of the environment and landscape above. The history of the land would be linked to a study of the natural environment as well as to the history of its people, the local industries, and its social and cultural life.
Information gathered would be made available on a website and stored eventually on an accessible digital archiving system.
