Hexham Riot workshops for Schools
Location: Northumberland
As part of the exam Riot 1761 project, two creative workshops were held at Hexham Middle School.
63 children from Beaufront and Newbrough First Schools took part in the workshop on Tuesday 8th June, and 30 pupils from St. Joseph’s RC and Hexham Middle Schools on Wednesday 9th June.
Each workshop was divided into two sessions; drama and art. Barbara Jervis and Kevin Wallace, from history interpreters word Arts, introduced the theme of the Riot through a story. They then used mime to bring to life the everyday activities involved in some of the occupations of the time – a farm labourer, a blacksmith, a miner and a servant. The role-playing session ended with a recreation of the ballot, with the “magistrate” selecting some of the children’s names from his hat.
The children then re-enacted the march to Hexham to confront the authorities and complain about the unfairness of taking men away from their work and families to serve in the militia.
Karen ran, the art facilitator, helped the children to create colourful sashes.
A “brainstorming” session produced dozens of ideas for symbols to represent the various occupations of the people of Tynedale at the time of the Riot.
The children then designed their own symbols to display on their sashes to represent their chosen occupations.
