150th Anniversary of John Martin's Death
Location: Northumberland

To mark the 150th anniversary of the artist's death, on the 17th February 2004 a short service was held at East Land Ends cottage, Haydon Bridge, his birthplace.

This was lead by the Rev. Alec Beniams, with contributions from Henry Swaddle who gave a review of his life and works, poet Keith Armstrong with two of his best known Martin works and Northumbrian Piper Sue Dunne who played 'Waters of Tyne' a most fitting tune for the event.

A crowd of over 40 people came to give thanks for the artist's life and work on a cold and windy afternoon.

Phyllida Irving and Betty Telford devised a commemorative wreath of an artist's palette and brushes for the occasion which was displayed at several venues during the celebrations.

An existing plaque on the north face of the cottage commemorates the 100th anniversary of his birth on the 19th July 1889.

In the evening, a further commemorative event took place in the Haydon Bridge Community Centre to a packed audience of over 200. A newly commissioned work by Dennis Telford called 'All the Way from Haydon Bridge' was premiered. This featured Dennis, Jill Henderson and music specially written and played by Tom Leader.

This was followed by an illustrated lecture by Specialist Victorian Art Historian Dr. Gail-Nina Anderson.

Both performances were enthusiastically received.
