Walks That Inspire
Location: Northumberland

Barbara Wardle is a long term resident of Haydon Bridge. John Martin's paintings have been a major influence on her life.

She arranged a series of walks in the places which influenced his later paintings and Martin knew as a child.

These were titled:
  • Plunderheath ... The Plains of Heaven

  • Woods and Streams ... including Langley Castle

  • Haresby Lonnen ... views of 'my native vale'

  • Harsondale and Staward Gorge

  • Mohope Valley and Martin's descendants
Some of these routes will be incorporated into the 'John Martin Heritage Trail' a new walk of some 14 miles around Haydon Bridge. This will have a directions sheet for users and a series of information panels throughout the trail at specific points of interest.
