The Touchwood Project
Location: Northumberland

Touchwood will be a rich environmental and artistic experience, focusing on the natural heritage of Tynedale. The objective is to explore the psychological roots of connecting with the natural world damaged by modern technology so that schoolchildren and others will have greater understanding of the importance of trees.

The project will work with 5 local schools, and adults with learning difficulties, and will culminate in a ‘Touch Wood’ tree pageant and film at the end of the summer terms in 2005 and 2006. The project will launch with a tree planting ceremony (not funded by LHI) and throughout the school terms the group will run environmental arts sessions incorporating storytelling, music, dance, mask making and tree map collages.

Local history groups will facilitate research into the history of local trees, and guided walks will be organised that celebrate their importance. A local tree heritage map will also be produced that highlights settlements in the district that have elements of trees in their names. Outputs will be displayed in public exhibitions, and will form part of a Project User Pack containing a story booklet, photographs from the film, maps and other documents.
