Tweedmouth History & Heritage Trail
Location: Northumberland

The project aims to involve residents, including local school children, in investigating the heritage of Tweedmouth. In particular, the three bridges spanning the river, commercial activity in, around and on the river through the ages and the significance of the settlement during the Border wars. Information gathered will be used to establish a heritage trail along the riverbank .

Five interpretation panels, seating, leaflets and leaflet distribution boxes will be located at key points along the route. A particular feature of this project will be a Braille facility for the interpretation panels. In addition to historical data the panels will include details of local flora and fauna.

Professional guidance, eg conservationist, historian, etc will be sourced to support volunteers. Open events will be held to encourage resident participation and community consultation, which along with the volunteer research, will inform the contents of the leaflet and information panels.

The suggested route will largely follow existing rights of way, a small proposed detour to allow the trail to link in with other paths is currently under discussion with a local landowner who is amenable to the proposal. Contingency plans are in place if required.
