Walltown - Making its mark Location: Northumberland
The closure of Walltown Quarry created the chance to see the underlying geology of the spectacular natural landscape. The group want to engage local people with Roman Heritage on their doorstep and demonstrate the importance of preserving this and the natural heritage.
The site is located at the centre of the Wall, with the Pennine Way and National Trail Path crossing at this point.
The project will increase community participation through events and projects around the quarry and improve interpretation and develop education.
Planned activities include:
information evenings to engage a wide variety of local groups
oral history project targeting former miners
a youth conservation project
young archaeologist's project
geology and archaeology events with help from both Northumberland and Durham Wildlife Trusts including a 'Clue Trail' for children
'Hard Rock Trail' with the 'Rockwatch' group (young geologists, GCSE students and adults)
Orienteering Trail
