Restoration plans
Location: Redcar and Cleveland
Our overall plan is to work towards the restoration of gardens that have been associated with Gisborough Priory since at least 1700. This project is made up of 3 areas of preparatory work they are important because they will underpin all subsequent works:- Research & Investigation
- Clearance & Consolidation
- Recording & Dissemination
*******************************************************
Research & Investigation
Research undertaken over the past few years has given us a reasonable idea about the main components of the garden that we hope to restore. However we have been advised that this is not really sufficient. Therefore, before this restoration can begin, certain surveys and research are essential:- Archival research
Topographical surveyArchaeological investigation and research- Arboricultural survey
- Walls and architectural survey
- Further detailed design work (in light of the above findings)
These will be achieved using volunteers from the local community wherever possible under the guidance and supervision of appropriate professionals.
*********************************************************** Clearance & Consolidation
Three key areas of the site need to be cleared and consolidated before restoration can begin:- The Monk's Walk and East Terrace area
- The glasshouse area
- The stream area & its banks
This work will be undertaken by volunteer working parties, recruited and coordinated by Gisborough Priory Project.
********************************************************* Recording & Dissemination
All activity on the project will be recorded and fed into the creation of the following dissemination materials:- A video diary of the projects progress:
Each phase of the project will be tracked on film to record a before, during and after log - this will form a permanent record of achievement and can be used to publicise activity
- 2 types of interpretative boards:
1) onsite boards to inform guided groups of site visitors (voluntary contributions will be encouraged), and 2) portable versions to be used when GPP members undertake school roadshows or local talks to keep the community up to date with regards to project progress
- CD Roms, leaflets and a short book summarising the history of the site
- Website updates
